A Prince's Dream

Once upon a time there was a rebellious young princess. She knew her brother would one day take up their father's mantle and so she was allowed to live free-spirited and bold. The princess preferred to spend her time doing things that would have gotten her scolded in court, even going so far as to sneak across the border to observe the people there, fascinated by differences that terrified others. She would sneak out more and more often until, finally, she dared to stay, swayed by her blooming love for a handsome young General she'd met.

He took her back to the Imperial capital and there she discovered her lover was no mere general but the King himself and once there he announced to his people his intention to marry her. The people, however, wondered, uncertain about the foreign princess' magic. Wondered what spell she might have put their king under to make him willing to place such a woman as his Queen.

They talked and whispered and the King's many courtesans, all of whom had hoped to garner his heart and approval began to plot. Dark murmurs swept through the palace and soon the princess was on edge, prepared to defend herself at every turn. There were many attempts on her life but the princess was clever and her new husband very protective. The wedding, which should have been a city wide celebration, was a quiet, closeted affair, the couple able only to trust a select few so close.

Still they were happy, madly in love and determined not to let anyone else get in the way of that. The Queen could not be a public figure, spending more and more time hidden away in the palace instead of in a prominent position at her husband's side. It worked out for the best that she was not always as visible to the people for when they discovered she was pregnant the response from the house was outspoken and cruel. The King would hear none of it. She was his wife and therefore, no matter how many sons he had sired among the women of his harem her child would have first rights to the throne.

A Queen was an inconvenience but ultimately changed little of the women's day to day lives. A mongrel prince was a threat to not only their livelihoods but the future of sons they had spent years grooming to be the perfect ruler... and to rely on them. The threats to the Queen's well being increased exponentially from then. Attempts on her life and the success of her pregnancy became a near daily occurrence.

In the following months when that child was born those attempts shifted to the infant. An infant is a delicate thing, after all, but between his mother's fierce protectiveness and his father's caution the Prince survived. Became more and more capable. The attempts never stopped, though he was blissfully ignorant as a toddler. But as the Imperial Prince grew so too did his elder brothers, children raised to understand that he was an abomination that should not be suffered to exist. An insult to their People and their pride.

The older boys would not be skilled or intelligent enough to make genuine attempts on the Prince's life until he was 7, their mothers' attempts far more subtle and easily hidden from a child, even one as clever as the young Prince was. The first try was sloppy and cruel, abuse that had the boy laid up in his mother's chambers for a week after, a wrist they worried might never heal.

There were many horrible ways to die in that unforgiving desert empire. Creatures whose venom could end a grown man with merely a drop. Plants so desperate to save themselves from the thirst and hunger of animals that they grow needles as long as a man's hand or kill anything that so much as brushes too close by with it's toxins. Extreme temperatures, dehydration, fierce competition for food by the wildlife. A dozen ways the land itself might complete the brothers' goal on any given day.

The Prince soon learned it was safer to escape the palace, escape those who wished him dead and instead give himself to the mercy of the city streets, knowing anyone that looked at him would know of his heritage, know he was of mixed blood and would likely make accusations or commit violence against him. Beatings and attempts to remove "thieving fingers" were far better than the more lethal actions that plagued him in the palace.

It never got better. No matter how the Queen wished to protect him. His parents understood early on that the best defense they could give him was the knowledge to protect himself. But he would always be on the outside, looking in at a people he could not help and could not join.

When the Queen learned of her brother's death back in her home country the Prince, only fifteen at the time, saw his way out. His escape. He accompanied his mother on a secret visit to her father, to mourn her brother... and the Prince escaped into a country where he would not be known, there would be no legion of siblings that want him dead, no merchants ready to separate him from his fingers for being too different.

Things he swiftly learned were not the same but still just as true on the other side of the mountains. His mother's people saw he was different and were just as cruel. Suspicious and eager to inflict violence upon the boy. No matter what he did or where he went he would be judged an outsider, never able to truly belong. It only made him more determined to find a way to bring the two Peoples together. So that there would no longer be any walls for him to look in from the outside.

But to do so he had to sacrifice something incredibly important. His ability to trust. To form meaningful connections. The dream he sought to bring to fruition would be decades in the making and every single person he met stood to potentially become a pawn in that great game of politics.

Anything was worth sacrificing, though, if another never had to suffer as he had.

Headcanons

Hello and welcome to my TEDtalk~

I know others have done far more extensive research and papers than I on references made by Claude to existing traditions and historical practices that line up well with comparisons between Almyra and real world empires. The developers have said that Adrestia is based loosely on Rome and some people have compared Almyra to the Persian Empire.

Persia: 675-330BC
Rome: 27BC - 1453 AD
Ottoman: 1299 - 1922 AD

While there are many stylistic things that lean towards Persian and Turkic origins in Claude's design as far as a historical counterpart to Rome it would be more accurate to use the Ottoman Empire as a reference. The term "Barbarossa" was also the name of a pair of brothers in the 16th century Ottoman Navy that achived the status of Admiral and one of them even went on to achieve greater military recognition. Hayreddin Barbarossa became Pasha of Algiers and in relatively recent history had a WWI battleship named after him.

There are a lot of stylistic things and allusions that can be taken from Claude's design and supports but the only text outright stated text reference in the game is that title.

A popular tumblr post that has been shared around makes some connections that are very good points of reference. I have also found a source for historical garments that I have been referencing.

I am doing my best to make sure I am researching things to portray Claude's culture as accurately and respectfully as I can given it is still technically a fantasy empire.

Similarly I have seen criticisms of people using a harem based system as part of the reason Claude seems to imply he isn't sure what will happen when he returns home or that he has family (half-brothers) that might have been part of the "Everyone hated him simply for existing." that he mentions in his A support with Marianne. That said, the Imperial Harem was an important part of the structure of high society in the Ottoman Empire.

Not only that but, after an 11 year civil war ensued when a number of the former sultan's sons all made claims to the throne, fratricide was legalized for over 150 years.

The topic of race and racism is a consistent theme in both Claude's story and Three Houses as a whole so I do apologize if it seems I am stressing it overly much but it is something that is always there in the back of his mind and is the driving force for not only his ambitions but many of his paranoid habits.

All of this really comes down to a location to leave my sources and try to maintain consistency for headcanons regarding Almyra. If you take issue with something I have said or done in regards to Claude's history please feel free to mention that here or in a PM. I do not want to offend anyone and I freely admit to being a white American playing a very complex mixed race character.

ยซ RECORD ยป

    Disposition:
Claude is renowned for his schemes, even as early as their academy days he has a reputation for being crafty, adaptable, and unconventional. Whether it's just for mischief or clever solutions to traditional warfare he always has some sort of trick up his sleeve. Claude is a thinker and an over thinker. It consistently gives him a leg up in most situations, it ensures he's always prepared for any eventuality, it... means he can never get a moment's rest.

"Playing the long game" is an understatement where Claude is concerned. His ability to plan and prepare also means that he has laid out extensive networking and slow building seeds for at least a dozen different ways to achieve one single end goal. Even after only a year in Fodlan he has grand plans for how he will begin to sow the seeds of change. These plans and ideas will take decades to become useful and most of them never will. But he still takes the time to build contingencies for his contingencies so that any situation that comes he will have an answer for.

This makes it all too easy for him to get caught up in his own head, a habit he does his best to combat with daily meditation. It also means that sometimes in simpler, usually personal, conflicts he may not always see the most straightforward answer as viable... or sometimes at all. Occasionally this has also led to him getting so hyperfocused on his goals and what needs to be done that he doesn't stop to take people's feelings into consideration.

In his determination to see his dreams (and schemes) come to fruition there are very few things that Claude is not willing to do. The entirety of his character as seen in canon is a lie. A carefully crafted facade that allows him to execute his plans from within what is, to him, enemy territory. Early on this means that he's carefree and playful, teasing others and outwardly seeming to take nothing seriously. Partially to ensure people underestimate him but also because he does not expect to have any real consequences to anything he does.

So long as he holds his secrets close there's no reason for anything to matter once he returns home. Except then there's a war and suddenly what was meant to be a couple of years becomes 6 more years of leading a country that is not his own. It gives him a much more direct hand in the developments he'd only meant to inspire initially but it also means that the web of lies he has constructed to keep his true ancestry a secret becomes more complex and fragile with each passing day.

He cares for others, he's not immune to making friends, but he keeps everyone at arm's length, only ever showing the cultivated persona of a carefree young man burdened with too much responsibility but too noble not to take up those duties. All of which is true, certainly, but also edited and tweaked until what everyone sees is as much a lie as it is a truth. The most convincing lies have a kernel of truth after all. It's why he took on a Fodlish name that was similar enough that he would not struggle to recall it or respond to it. The same reason he merely swapped the order of names when he offered a name to GemSci. Something he will still answer to without a thought even if it's not quite right.

Claude von Riegan is similar to living the life most people only show on instagram. But it's not just posts it's every moment, every second he might be observed, every interaction he has with another person. All carefully displayed to portray a person that doesn't really exist.

He's been doing this since he was at least 15 and he is exhausted. None of it was supposed to go on so long and more importantly now that he's had a small taste of the freedoms of only hiding his motivations and not literally everything about him it is going to be much, much more difficult for him to maintain those carefully constructed walls.

Because of this persona, his history with numerous attempts on his life, and the nature of the changes he wishes to make (specifically talking about equality while trying to hide the fact that he's not Fodlish among an entire country of incredibly racist people) Claude has developed a... healthy sense of paranoia. He is cautious about everything he does which only leads to more over planning, always considering that someone, somewhere wants him dead or to destroy his ideals. In fact it's usually safer, in his experience, to assume everyone wants him dead for one reason or another. Though it is clear in some of his interactions towards the end of canon that he wants to. He doesn't want to lie to his friends any more, he's so tired of being something he's not... but his own paranoia refuses to let him be honest with anyone.

    Under pressure:
Claude has been under pressure his entire life. Whether it's his brothers trying to kill him or spending years in an enemy country that would no doubt have him executed if his true identity were revealed. He's always in a low level state of fight or flight and he handles it by, as mentioned above, planning. Planning and over planning and over thinking everything he possibly can, devouring information that might give him an advantage, trying to see everything from different angles, different perspectives. His instinctive response to any kind of social or political pressure is to lie. Spin a story with just enough truth that he can maintain the lie easily.

He is paranoid and distrustful, very good at reading people and learning their motivations, even using his charming persona and lies to give him the advantage over anyone. To manipulate people into doing what he needs them to do to achieve his own ends.

    Condition upon arrival:
Probably the most relaxed he's ever been... thanks for that. Claude had been home in Almyra for a few weeks at the point I'm pulling him from. Long enough that the war in Fodlan is thoroughly settled but he has not been in Almyra long enough to make his claim to the throne.

    Abilities:
    Master Tactitian
This is a title that is tossed around a lot where Claude is concerned. He does not consider himself a master tactician but there is no denying that he is incredibly skilled at military tactics and warfare. He relies more on speed, precision, and planning than the more traditional methods of brute force that Fodlan is familiar with. Many of his methods simply come along with having an outside perspective.

    Crest of Riegan
Sometimes restores HP equal to 30% of damage dealt when using combat arts. Practically this translates to an innate low level healing magic that can trigger when he pulls off a particularly powerful attack.

    Leicester Lineage
    Multiplies experience earned by 1.2.
Allows unit to pass through spaces occupied by foes

Both of these abilities are mechanical representations of traits Claude exhibits. He is very cleverand adaptable. Learning comes easily to him and he is often able to pick things up on the fly, thus the faster experience gain. Claude is also characterized by a lot of acrobatic stunts and being one of the fastest most dextrous units in the game. It makes sense, then, that he would be able to dart and dodge around enemy units that others would be unable to get past.

    Combat Arts
Claude's primary focus in training has always been with bows and most of the Arts he has access to are related to just that. While he is most comfortable with his bow on a wyvern, a fighting style that is implied to be distinctly Almyran, he is also skilled with a sword as well. Not only is the Sword of Begalta boosted by his crest he is also shown in some of the animated scenes to use a sword, regardless of if the player has trained him in it.

    Poison Master
Even in his teens Claude demonstrated knowledge in formulating his own poisons. With the real world region Almyra is modeled after venomous creatures would be a daily occurence that he was familiar with. This may also be an indication that while Fodlan relies heavily on magic Almyra has developed more scientifc means to handle the same situations, indicating a familiarity with chemistry that others in canon are not shown to have.

    Inventory:
A set of Almyran clothing, a jambiya, two tiny vials of poison (one debilitating, one fatal), another small Fodlish style dagger, and the Sword of Begalta.

    Gembond: Amethyst
    Gem Location: Lower abdomen
